Summary: ‚I am starting with the man in the mirror.‘ Individualization of social transformation as a political dead end

We are asked to put our critique of society into practice by starting with ourselves. We are expected to consume responsibly and to change our speech. Despite being conceptualized as political, this approach in fact reverses the direction of political action and ends up in self-imposed restrictions. By focussing on the individual, we are accepting a sphere of activity where taking action is barely more than asceticism. Instead of criticizing authority, it remains limited to self-reflection and selfcorrection. Moreover, authority and its structural character are not conceived. By means of such imperatives and self-practices, neoliberal understandings of society build impact on left-wing politics. In neoliberal ideology, society is only the sum of its members and these ‘atomic’ individuals are seen to hold power to change society by individual actions. In our point of view, this reflects the rejection of a corporate and transformative project, which in fact would depend on political organization. We are convinced that the debate on political practice and how to achieve real political changes needs to critically take into account the role of power and subjectivity, authority and society.
