Summary: Cooperative learning – a new approach to learning research?

The psychological research on cooperation and cooperative learning is involved in societal developments in particular ways. The collapse of the Soviet Union seems to have raised doubts not only about the concept of the collective, but also about the hitherto prevailing Western concept of cooperation. The research an cooperative learning reflects a societal dilemma. In the ongoing societal change cooperation becomes increasingly necessary and, at the same time, increasingly impossible. Put in more general terms, „the social dimension“ becomes increasingly significant and, at the same time, increasingly unrealisable as subjectivity for societal development. A change of paradigm seems necessary not only for the research on cooperation, but also for our understanding of it.
