Summary: Authoritarianism as an anti-racist learning objective? Critical reflections on the „Blue Eyed/Brown Eyed“ training (Jane Elliott)

The authors, both experienced in inter-cultural and anti-racist educational work, begin by pointing out minimal requirements of anti-racist education. This serves as a foil to scrutinize Jane Elliotts anti-racism training programme, both with respect to its theoretical explanation for „racism“ and to the progress reports on its practice. While the conceptualisation of „racism“ does not lead beyond a dichotomous culprit-victim scheme, the practical training shows a concervative authoritarian understanding of education. In addition, an anti-dialogical style of communication appears to be predominant in the interaction with the participants.
